Cord 'felt the love' during CU visit

Chase Cord has not had a chance to visit many colleges so far, but the three-star quarterback prospect took a trip out to CU to check out the Buffs last Saturday.

Chase Cord, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound pro-style quarterback prospect from Peoria (Ariz.) Sunrise Mountain, took the trip to Boulder with his mother and grandparents. The Buffaloes were the first power conference program to offer him last October.

“It was really awesome touring the school and seeing how big it is,” Cord said when asked to recap his visit to CU. “The spring game was fun to watch, seeing the tempo. It was also awesome seeing the new locker room, the new indoor practice facility and the weight room. It is really exciting what they have built there. On Saturday night, we went down on Pearl Street and had dinner and did some walking around. It was a lot of fun.

“They really showed how much they care about me, not only as an athlete, but also as a person. We had [defensive graduate assistant] Corey [Edsall] helping us out and he was always giving us helpful information on the facilities and everything else. I just really felt the love from the coaches and that made it that much more enjoyable.”

Boise State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State and Nevada are the other schools that have offered Cord. The only other program he has had a chance to visit so far is Arizona State.

“I went to a couple camps at ASU last summer and took another unofficial visit before my sophomore year,” Cord said. “At the Junior Day I went to recently, it was a lot shorter than Colorado's. Colorado did a really good job sharing their facilities and time.

“At ASU, I didn't feel as much love and support from them directed towards me. They didn't really make me feel comfortable or sell me on liking their school. I haven't received an offer from them, though, so that is kind of where we're at with them."

Northwestern, Oregon State, Indiana and Texas A&M are some of the colleges that have talked about stopping by Sunrise Mountain to see Cord during the spring evaluation period, which begins this Friday and extends through May.

Cord does not have any other unofficial visits scheduled, and he is not sure exactly when he will make his college decision.

“It is something I am talking to my parents about, but it is kind of tough to say right now,” Cord said when asked about his timetable for giving a commitment. “It is an important decision. It is going to be where I spent the next four years learning and playing football. I am thinking right now maybe I could decide after the spring, maybe after the summer, or maybe not until after the football season.”

Currently ranked as the nation's 25th best pro-style quarterback prospect from the Class of 2016, Cord threw for more than 3,000 yards and ran for more than 1,000 yards as a junior. Playing at the Division III level in Arizona, he was named the Peoria District Player of the Year and the West Valley Preps Offensive Player of the Year in 2015.

“I hear a lot from college coaches that they like my arm strength and my technique. They say I am a mobile quarterback, that I can get myself out of sticky situations and they just like how I lead and stay calm under pressure. It is a blessing hearing all that,” Cord said. “I am glad the hard work I have put in shows on film.”
