Q&A with future Buff Davis Webb

Former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb took time out to talk with BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger shortly after he announced his intention to transfer to CU for this fourth and final year of college eligibility.

Webb started 14 games during his three years in Lubbock with the Red Raiders.

What led to your decision to want to transfer to Colorado?

Davis Webb: “I had many schools contact me and I just felt like Colorado was a great situation, a great fit. I felt like [Buffs head] coach [Mike] MacIntyre and his staff, along with the players there, really want to win a lot of games. I feel like I can be a great teammate and help them out and help them go to a bowl game and really get this program going back in the right direction again.”

Was there a moment when it clicked for you and you knew Colorado is where you wanted to be?

“I got offered by Colorado out of high school but really didn't consider it because I was committed to Texas Tech so early. So when I got the call again from Coach MacIntyre, I thought it would be a spot to consider. And obviously [former Texas Tech coach and new Buffaloes assistant] coach Darrin Chiaverini is there and I have pretty good ties with him. I visited Boulder and sat down and watched the offense and got to meet all the coaches and met with the players, and I really felt like that was a perfect fit. There are probably not many places in America that would treat you that way and treat you that respectfully and really make you feel like they need and want you. I had a really good feeling about Colorado as soon as I got on campus and after I left campus. Coach 'Chiv,' Coach MacIntyre and [co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks] coach [Brian] Lindgren visited me in Lubbock yesterday and that is when I told them I was going to commit to Colorado.”

For any Colorado fans that didn't get to see you play during your time with the Red Raiders, what can you tell them about yourself as a quarterback? What will you add to the Colorado football program?

“I will be a good teammate and a hard worker. I was the youngest captain ever voted at Texas Tech and that is something I pride myself on, being a great teammate. Hopefully if I get on the field, I'll compete at a high level and I'll leave it all on the field and get Colorado to a bowl game. That is the ultimate goal and we'll go from there.”

You mentioned your ties with Coach Chiaverini. He knows your strengths as a quarterback... I'd imagine that made you feel more comfortable with Colorado? You won't be there for spring ball, but I'd assume they will be able to implement some things this summer that will suit your strengths?

“No doubt. That was one of the things that went into my decision. Going through the recruiting process a second time, I didn't want to have blind faith. A lot of these great schools that have very good records contacted me, but I didn't really know if I could trust them or really believe they were going to give me a fair chance. I know what type of person and man Coach Chiaverini is and I know I was going to get a fair shot to compete. I am not asking to be a starter from day one. I am not asking for them to give me the keys to the castle. I am just asking them to give me a fair chance to compete and we'll go from there. If I get beat out, I get beat out. But if I don't, then I will try to take Colorado back to where it needs to be.”

The Buffaloes only have a few spots left for their 2016 recruiting class, but with the news of your decision to transfer to Colorado breaking a week before signing day, do you hope it catches the attention of some recruits and gives the Buffs a late recruiting boost?

“Yes, sir. That is one of the reasons I decided so early. I had a good feeling I was going to go to Colorado and there are some recruits that I have been talking to. They are all pretty excited about Colorado football and the direction it is going. I feel like in the next four or five days, there will be a couple more commits.”

I know you were originally scheduled to visit Auburn in February and you mentioned many schools contacted you. What were some of the other colleges you considered before committing to Colorado?

“Many SEC schools, some Pac-12, and a couple Big Ten. I am not going to say any names because that is just not fair to them. But a lot of prestigious power five schools.”

Was it fun going through the recruiting process a second time, or mostly stressful?

“It wasn't really stressful. I knew the circumstances I had, which was one more year and I had one more shot to do this so I wanted to make a pretty educated decision. I probably made a better decision now because I knew more about college and college football. I know coaches around the area and across the country that know Coach MacIntyre and other coaches on that staff and I got a chance to really do my homework before I made a decision. So I feel very comfortable with this decision. I am just thankful I got an opportunity to come to Colorado. And now that I am committed, I am looking forward to helping out as much as I can and being a great teammate and hopefully leading the Buffaloes to a great 2016 season.”

You won't officially sign your paperwork with Colorado to make your transfer official until May, correct?

“Yes, sir.”

Will you then be in Boulder for the start of the first summer school session?

“Yes, sir. I will be there before May 31, but that will be my first official day as a grad student there at Colorado.”

How do you plan to stay sharp as a quarterback in the meantime?

“I have a couple Texas Tech assistant strength coaches working me out. They are trying to get me in the best shape possible so I can go up there and really compete from day one. Also, I am throwing with many ex-teammates of mine that were seniors this year. I am just trying to stay on top of everything to make sure I am ready to go from day one.”
