JUCO safety commits to Buffs during 'unbelievable' trip to Boulder

Kyle Trego's patience paid off. The California native previously turned down offers from non-power conference programs in an attempt to earn a chance to play Pac-12 football.

On Sunday, three-and-a-half weeks after signing day for the Class of 2016, the safety prospect from Diablo Valley College received an offer from the Buffaloes.

“I was in Colorado on my official visit having breakfast with them and they offered. I gave them a verbal [commitment] and I am actually going to sign to make it official tonight,” Trego said while boarding his plane back to California. “I am going to end up going to Colorado.”

Trego led Diablo Valley College with four picks in 2015, and he finished second on the team in stops.

Trego measured in at 5-foot-11.75, 193-pounds during his official visit to Colorado. The Buffaloes expect him to factor in at either safety or nickel back.

“'Chido' (Chidobe Awuzie) served as my player host and my trip was just unbelievable,” Trego recapped. “The scenery of the stadium and all the new facilities definitely caught my eye. The facilities are brand new.

“The bond between the players also stood out to me. They get along really well. And the coaching staff there is friendly, so there were no negatives about it. Everything about Colorado was positive. There was definitely no reason for me to say no to the offer.”

Trego will arrive in Colorado on May 31 ready to participate in the summer strength and conditioning program. He will have four years to play three with the Buffaloes.

“To know where I am going to be for the next three or four years of my life is a big change, and one I am really excited about,” Trego expressed.

A full qualifier out of Liberty Union High School in Brentwood, Trego turned down an offer from Air Force as a prep senior. And after a stellar freshman season at Diablo Valley College, he turned down an offer from Eastern Michigan. San Diego State, Cal Poly and UTSA are some other colleges that showed interest in Trego in recent weeks.

“I declined those offers because I know I can compete at a higher level," Trego told BuffStampede.com last week. “After last season, my coach and I both thought I could get a better offer if I stayed another semester.”

Colorado only has one scholarshiped underclassman safety on its roster for spring practices, and no prep safeties from the Class of 2016 signed with the Buffs. Trego will add some much needed depth at the position. And Trego believes he can be more than just a depth piece.

“I think I could make a big impact because I am an impact player. I have the film to show it,” he previously said. “I am a very nice guy so no one at Colorado would hate me if I go there. I hustle, and everyone likes a hustler, so I think they are going to like me out there.”
